Joy Smith leaves Clemson; Howell appointed interim dean of students

Student Affairs Vice President Gail DiSabatino has appointed Verna Howell interim dean of students, in addition to her duties as an associate vice president for student affairs at Clemson, effective Jan. 18. Howell will assume the position as current Associate Vice President and Dean of Students Joy Smith leaves Jan. 17 to become vice president for campus life and dean of students at Presbyterian College in Clinton. A Clemson alumnae, Smith has worked at the university for 34 years.

Howell, also a Clemson alumnae, has served the university in a variety of capacities, including residential life area coordinator, director of residential life, and executive director of university housing since 1980. In her current role, Howell’s work is focused on strengthening collaborations that enhance student transitions, engagement, retention and learning. She oversees the Office of New Student and Family Programs as well as the Office of Community and Ethical Standards.

"Joy leaves a great legacy," DiSabatino said. "She has set a very high bar for how we work with students – as advocates, friends, teachers, and advisers. We wish her well and know that Verna will provide capable leadership as we move forward."
