Promoting Your Health: Men's Health Checklist
Advocate for your own health and your brothers
We need to be aware of the ways we can be healthier and do things necessary to protect our health. Encourage your brothers to do the preventive items to prevent illness.
A comprehensive Black men's health checklist should include regular checkups, screenings for common conditions, and lifestyle adjustments to promote overall well-being. It's crucial to prioritize regular physical exams, blood pressure checks, cholesterol screenings, and discussions about prostate cancer screenings with a healthcare provider, especially given the higher risks associated with these conditions in Black men.
Here are some key actions to prevent illness:
Key Health Checkups and Screenings:
Physical Exams:
Regular physical exams are essential for overall health maintenance. Men over 45 should have an annual physical exam, and younger men should have one every three to five years.
Blood Pressure Screening:
African American men have a higher risk of hypertension, so it's crucial to monitor blood pressure regularly.
Cholesterol Levels:
African American men tend to have higher cholesterol levels, increasing the risk of heart disease. Starting at age 35, it's advisable to have cholesterol levels checked every five years.
Black men have a higher risk of developing prostate cancer, so discussions about screening with a healthcare provider are important, especially starting in the early 40s.

A1C Test:
Screening for high blood sugar levels with an A1C test can help detect diabetes.
A normal BMI for African American men is 18.5 to 24.9. Following up with your doctor to understand your appropriate weight and BMI is crucial.
Aim for 7 to 9 hours of sleep as an adult, as poor sleep habits can increase the risk of chronic diseases.
Lifestyle Adjustments:
Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains is essential for maintaining a healthy weight and preventing heart disease.
Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise most days of the week.
These habits can significantly impact overall health and increase the risk of various diseases.
Find healthy ways to manage stress, such as exercise, meditation, or spending time with loved ones.
Additional Considerations:
Don't hesitate to seek mental health support if needed. Regular mental health screenings and open discussions with a healthcare provider can lead to timely and effective treatment.
Black men are more likely to live in areas with limited access to healthy food and quality healthcare facilities. Advocate for access to affordable and quality healthcare services.
